Wynonna Earp – spicy, hard-living, demon-slaying anti-heroine and great-great-granddaughter of legendary lawman Wyatt Earp – must return, once again, to her hometown of Purgatory to battle her greatest foe yet: a psychotic villainess hellbent on revenge against Wynonna… and everyone she loves.
At Big Gay Energy, we recently had the pleasure of interviewing Melanie Scrofano and Tim Rozon to promote the much-anticipated Wynonna Earp: Vengeance. Stepping back into their beloved roles of Wynonna and Doc brought back all the feels — not just for them, but for us Earpers, too. Here's a look into the conversation, filled with laughter, nostalgia, and of course, some memorable Earper moments.
Back in the Saddle: What It Felt Like to Return
I kicked things off with a question everyone has been asking: What was it like for them to step back into these iconic roles?
Melanie’s answer, with her characteristic humor, set the tone: “Cold. Hard nipples.” She quickly followed up with, “It was like the warmest hug.” For Melanie, returning to Wynonna meant re-entering the world created by showrunner Emily Andras and all the collaborative magic that came with it. She compared it to stepping back into a family dynamic: "You step back into the world, you step back into Emily's brain, Jake’s dolly grip, and all the pieces that make us who we are as characters."
How Much to Hydrate for Lesbian Jesus?
I couldn’t resist bringing up our signature rating system on the podcast: the Lesbian Jesus Hydration Scale. Since queer representation is as essential as water, I asked Melanie and Tim how much hydration would be needed for Wynonna Earp: Vengeance.
Melanie admitted she wasn’t quite up to the task of calculating hydration needs, joking that she wasn't "good at science" and doesn’t drink enough water to provide an answer. But Tim had a fun take on it. He compared the hydration requirement to preparing for a major California hike, where you’d carry a backpack with a hydration tube filled with water—about 2 to 3 liters in total.
The "Big Energy" Award: Stairs and Exploding Taps
Another fan-favorite segment on our podcast is the Big Gay Energy Award, given to the moment or character that exudes "Big Gay Energy". I asked both Melanie and Tim what they thought deserved the Big Energy Award from the original series.
For Melanie, it was the memorable moment when the tap exploded on Waverly. “Let’s go OG,” she said. Tim, on the other hand, brought up something only true Earpers would understand: stairs. “You just mention stairs, and an entire fan base will go crazy,” he noted, referencing one of the most iconic inside jokes within the Earper community. Not going to lie, this may have been the first thing to come to my mind as well!
Character Growth and Evolution
I was curious about how Wynonna and Doc have evolved since we last saw them. Melanie reflected on Wynonna’s journey toward embracing love, a concept she’s always struggled with. “For Wynonna, it’s about being brave enough to choose love. Even if that’s scary,” she explained.
Tim spoke to Doc’s transformation, which felt like a departure from his old cowboy ways. “Maybe it’s time for the old ways to die... His way of thinking, his way of being, it’s had its place,” he said, adding that Doc had found peace over the course of the series and especially with Vengeance.
Behind the Scenes: Favorite Moments While Filming
When asked about memorable moments during the filming of Vengeance, both Melanie and Tim had some heartwarming and fun stories to share. Melanie reminisced about their tradition of going out for dinner.
Tim’s standout memory was seeing a new actor, Andrew Bushell, join the world of Wynonna Earp. “Watching this young actor just realize what it’s like in this crazy show... you can’t fake it on a show like Wynonna Earp,” he said, sharing how exhilarating it was to see new talent dive into the wild world they’ve created.
Earper Love: The Fans That Keep Giving
No Wynonna Earp interview would be complete without talking about the incredible Earper community. Tim and Melanie both spoke with deep gratitude for the fans who’ve supported them over the years. Tim recalled how, upon learning they were coming back for Vengeance, his first thought was about how excited the Earpers would be. “It was the first time I’ve ever gotten a call for a job where I wasn’t like, ‘Yes, I got a job.’ I thought of the Earpers before I thought of myself.”
Melanie shared a touching story from a Star Trek convention where Earpers showed up with a sign and QR code to promote Wynonna Earp. “I think I cried,” she admitted, overwhelmed by the support of fans who continue to follow her work beyond the show.
